Chapter 5

Desire burned in Aleese’s blood. More than anything she wanted a taste of their stunning guest. She’d have to regrettably curb her appetite for the svelte woman, at least for now.

“You’re reading my mind, Eaven. The night is young, and our other guests will be happy to entertain themselves. Our presence won’t be missed.”

“Quite right, my love. Let’s take our new kitten elsewhere to play. Upstairs, away from all this noise and intrusion.”

Eaven’s knuckles brushed Natasha’s cheek, and the woman shuddered. Whether from fear or arousal, Aleese couldn’t be certain, both mingled with her pheromones. Either way, she was theirs, evident by the way she stood her ground. Professional curiosity? Aleese sucked her bottom lip between her teeth. Curiosity could get somebody into trouble if not careful where they stepped.

Natasha licked her lips, and it took all of Aleese’s self-control not to taste her mouth again.

“Won’t others be upset? I mean they came here solely to meet you two, right?”

Aleese shook her head. “That’s the thing with vampire balls, so few of the guests care to mingle with the hosts, unless they’re asking for donations. The majority of the time the invitation is all they need to show off to friends and families. And for those attending, to brag about their dress designers and how much the service cost them. We’re in the twenty-first century, but women haven’t changed much in that respect.”

“It’s a status symbol and nothing more,” Eaven added. “And we’ve offered all the money we intend to this year.”

Aleese chuckled. “They can be a pack of piranhas unless we cut them off early.”

Nat blew out her pent-up breath when Eaven’s knuckles left her cheek—the lingering heat of her touch like a sunburn.

“Oh God.” Her mind worked overtime trying to right her tipping world. I can take advantage of this, use it to discover more about the missing women. “Yes, okay, we can do that. Leave the ball, I mean.”

They drifted back into the ballroom and through the throngs of women—drifting being an appropriate term, since they were stopped often. While her hosts were poised and composed, Nat felt like a train wreck after the make-out session. Sweat beaded on her upper lip and she licked it away then cringed over the taste of makeup. She felt faint once more and cursed the tight fit of the bodice restricting her breathing. No wonder women had been considered the weaker sex if they had to be strapped into a real corset daily.

“Cruel and unusual punishment,” she muttered under her breath. “Men must have invented them.”

Eventually they broke free of the guests and headed down a different corridor than the one she’d used upon arriving.

“We’ll spare you the stairs and use the lift,” Aleese explained. “We can see you’re not used to those shoes.”

The stilettos pinched her toes like a vise. In another hour the pain would pass on to agony. She should’ve considered her options more before purchasing them. “Heels of this height aren’t really required in my day-to-day job.
